The gallery’s mission is to promote the dialogue of contemporary art in Antwerp by exhibiting works of emerging and established artists from around the world who challenge our perception and the possibilities of art. In addition to an ambitious exhibition program, Newchild will present a rotating collection of 20th-century design. Newchild was founded in 2018 as a collaboration between Chandler Noah, and co-owners: husband artist Diego Castaño, and art specialist and advisor Sarah Vanwelden.
Located on the ground level of a 180-year-old townhouse, the 2200 sq/ft space was newly finished in May 2020 after an extensive renovation that took 2 years to complete. Chandler Noah designed and oversaw every detail of the construction. The gallery features a luminous front gallery clad in Douglas-fir, an otherworldly portal-like corridor linking the front and back galleries with an oversized diffused LED light ceiling.
When designing the gallery, Noah sought to “focus on notions of phenomenology and study how to enhance the experience of art viewing by creating spaces that are transformative, contemplative, and that give the artworks
ample space to breathe. We also want our clients to experience a sense of the otherworldly upon passing through our doors”, Noah says this can be attributed to a strong play on light and shadow.
