Treetop House

Amid the towering forest trees, where the lake water shimmers in the distance, architecture rises, enveloped by nature. Treetop House merges with the canopy, enriched by daylight as it shifts through the rooms and by long Douglas planks that echo the trees just outside.

Set on a steeply sloping site near Silkeborg, Denmark, Treetop House is the result of a deeply personal self-build project by Jesper Vittrup, realised over seven to eight years in his spare time. Driven by a desire to let nature define the home, the building occupies a site that drops nine metres where the house is positioned. Supported by concrete columns, it hovers among the treetops, overlooking both forest and lake. Expansive glazing softens the boundary between indoors and outdoors, inviting the changing seasons into every room.

Developed through conversations with architect friends, the home's overall structure and interior solutions are rooted in Vittrup's own ideas and experience from the construction industry. The ambition was to create a house that allows its surroundings to take centre stage.

The same philosophy informed the choice of Douglas Natural for the flooring. Each plank was produced to match the exact length of its room, creating uninterrupted surfaces, while the longest planks extend up to 12.5 metres through the living area and open-plan kitchen. Finished with Lye and White Soap, the floor reflects daylight with a calm, understated softness. The natural appearance of knots remains clearly visible, preserving the wood’s authenticity and reinforcing the close connection to the forest trunks beyond the glazing.

"There is something truly special about creating from your own ideas and with your own hands. As the process gradually evolves into finished spaces, it's hard not to fall just a little bit in love with the result."

— Jesper Vittrup, owner of Treetop House

Treetop House exists in harmony with its surroundings. A place where the forest becomes part of the experience, and where the natural character of the materials lends the home a sense of calm that resonates with the landscape beyond.
