“The Hide Warehouse” in Strandgade 104 was built in 1806 as part of the Royal Greenland Dock, a waterfront area in the northwestern corner of Christianshavn, Copenhagen. Today, this centrally located time capsule has been reimagined by Studio David Thulstrup and now houses four carefully restored apartments that tell the story of the building’s history through carefully chosen materials and design solutions.

Strandgade 104 was specifically built to store the many skins, especially from seals, polar bears, blue foxes, and reindeer, that were imported from Greenland and then sold at auction.
The four exclusive apartments now convey the ambience of a boutique hotel and exude a serene atmosphere, characterised by muted, warm tones and an emphasis on natural materials. All interior surfaces are rich in texture, creating a sensory experience. The floors are Dinesen Pine, curated in different widths and treated with white soap to enhance their natural beauty and give more light to the spaces. The walls, rendered in chalk and sand, add a textured, earthy quality that complements the floors.
The design harmoniously blends the contemporary and timeless, offering modern comfort without sacrificing the building’s historic essence. Every detail of the space speaks to a strong sense of place and history, highlighting the architectural integrity of the original structure.
The elevator within the building is adorned with leather, a nod to the building’s original use as a hide warehouse.
One of the four apartments is the penthouse, which includes a second attic level. The apartments are more or less open spaces due to the strict approval process and meticulous conservation standards. Thulstrup managed to make sense of the layout and sense of space without the possibility of dividing into rooms separated by physical walls.
This project is a testament to the beauty that comes from preserving historical elements while incorporating refined, understated luxury, resulting in a space that feels both warm, welcoming and luxurious.
